Cutting the food bill by 50% or more.............Step 2

Hello Everyone!
here we go with Step 2 on our way to cutting the food bill by 50% or more...................

Step Two..................Eat less meat

You know, when we have to cut the food bill........cut the meat.  Sometimes this doesn't go over well with hubby.....but................if your income has been cut, you can save a lot by cutting down on the meat you serve.  Meat is a HUGE part of the grocery budget.  And remember the Word of Wisdom tells us the following:

12 Yea, aflesh also of bbeasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used csparingly;   D/C 89

Note the word "sparingly"?

It may be a good idea to sit hubby down and have a talk about the food budget.

Some meals are meatless anyway and the family eats them willingly.......such as:
Chili (try Painted Desert Chili on Blog)
pizza
spaghetti  (try Spagetti w/Marinara Sauce on Blog)
fetuccine alfredo (noodle video on Blog)
baked potato bar
bean burritos (try homemade tortillas....video on blog)
beans and rice  (try Black Beans & Rice and Whatever on Blog)

and soups.......Pasta e Fagioli, Fannie Farmer Oatmeal soup (don't laugh....it's great!), etc.........there are loads of soups that fit the bill.  I could eat soup every day......Check out some of the soups that are on the Building the Ark blog.  If you are receiving this via email you will have to click on the bottom and go to the actual blog site.  Everything is archived there.

When you do buy meat.......choose the less expensive cuts or meats on deep discount and use smaller portions.  Most of us have gotten out of control with portion sizes.  Whole chickens are on sale throughout the year.  Ham is on sale usually during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  Turkey is priced best in November.

Stock up meats while on sale.  Freeze in smaller portions.  Example:  Ham....sliced thin for sandwiches, or ham and eggs......some for pizza (where u don't need a lot)

If you are careful and use less meat in your recipes, combined with several meatless meals a week and you will see a major difference in your grocery bill.

so to recap:
Step 1 - A Well Stocked Pantry
Step 2 - Eat Less Meat
remember.........the more you incorporate these steps into your plans...........the more the food budget will drop..........it's up to you.

step three next Sunday..................
